Forum Best Practices
Online forums are like conversations where a topic is started and other forum participants chime in with their opinion. Forums provide numerous benefits and can help you to build your coaching business. I suggest that you find 2 kinds of forums and participate in both of them.
The first kind of forum you should find is a coaching forum. You might find a coaching forum that is specific to the kind of coaching you do (productivity coaching, for example). The second kind of forum you should find is a forum related to your clientele. That is, find a forum where your clientele tend to spend their time. A business coach, for example, might sign up at a forum for entrepreneurs.
The coaching forum will give you access to other coaches and resources and information that can help you to be a better coach. The other forum – the "client-specific" forum – will give you access to potential clients.
But wait! Don’t just run to sign up yet. There’s an etiquette to forums (and if you don’t follow it, you could be bad-mouthed on the forum or, worse yet, completely banned!). Here are the best practices I would recommend to become a good forum participant:
1. Find several forums that you might like to participate in. Pick as many as half a dozen of each (coaching-specific and client-specific). You can find them just by Googling "coach forum" or "entrepreneur forum" or whatever specific terminology applies to you.
2. Schedule time each day to read each of your selected forums. Don’t participate yet! Just read. Find out what the flavor of the forum is. Is the information helpful? Are there a lot of members? Are the members active? Is the forum moderated effectively? Do you see a lot of spam? How old is the forum? Who are the most frequent participants and do you value what they say? Can you contribute as a valuable member of the group? Spend at least a week reviewing the forums to narrow them down. If, by the end of the week, you still have more than one coaching forum and more than one client-specific forum, then spend another week reviewing the forums. You will slowly narrow down your choices to one each as you view the forums and see which ones are more likely to be helpful to you.
3. Then sign up. Just leave the minimum amount of information required to sign up, and perhaps an avatar (which is a small picture that will appear beside your name. Sometimes people go all out and sign-up and add lots of links in their signature. However, keep it tasteful and brief. Sign up with your name and don’t worry about adding a link to your website just yet. (We’ll get to that, trust me).
4. Briefly introduce yourself if there’s a place to do so (many forums offer one section that allows you to do that. Introduce yourself but don’t heavily promote yourself). The point here is not to jump in and say "hey, I’m a coach and if you need coaching, please contact me!!!" because that could turn people off. Instead, simply introduce yourself tastefully and without a lot of fanfare.
5. Now participate. Don’t start any new topics yet. Just dive into existing topics and comment. Participate in half a dozen conversations every day for a week. If you have the time, participate in more, but half a dozen per day is adequate.
6. Once you’ve done this for at least a week (perhaps even two weeks), start a topic. By now, you’ll be very familiar with the forum and what people want to talk about. Start a topic and "moderate" that topic by interacting with those who participate in the discussion.
7. After you’ve started at least one discussion, then you’re ready to add your website link to your signature. By now, you have developed some credibility and reputation on the board.
8. Schedule time each day to participate in 2 or 3 discussions and try to start at least one discussion every week.
By doing this, you’ll gain a credible reputation on 2 forums and that reputation will help to increase your business!
