Gaining a Reputation
Some coaches are happy to earn solid income and put in a good day’s work by setting up appointments and coaching people each and every day.
But other coaches want more. Maybe they want to position themselves as an expert or maybe they want to increase their income or maybe they want to take their career to the next level. Whatever the case may be, if you find yourself in this latter group of coaches wanting to go to the next step, one avenue to pursue is speaking engagements.
Speaking engagements allow you to reach a wider audience with your message, as well as earn some additional income and meet more potential clients.
Start small – just at the local library or a community organization or the Rotary club. See if they might be interested in hearing you speak on your topic. You might not earn an income from speaking at these venues but you could meet potential clients and at the very least, you’ll hone your skills for when you’re ready to move up.
Once you’ve gained some experience confidence, move from the local level to a large level (perhaps try to get into a city-wide event or a tradeshow or a convention of some kind). Here, you might earn some money from speaking but it’s also here that you will begin to see some income from back-of-the-room sales.
Back-of-the-room sales are made when you sell books that you’ve written or CDs or DVDs that you’ve recorded of yourself speaking. These things will need to be in place when you move from the local to the larger regional level.
And here’s a tip to make it even more successful: Create a newsletter and invite people to sign up at your website. This will help you to keep in touch with your seminar attendees on an ongoing basis and earn further income from them in the months and years to come.
Eventually, you may want to look into working with a speaker’s bureau that can help you to book speaking engagements around the country (or around the world). They will take a cut of your speaking income but they’ll also take care of a lot of the preliminary marketing and legwork for you.
It all starts with you making the first step and creating a single speech that encapsulates some of your most popular coaching truths and delivers it in an engaging way.
